Miyakejima is the most active volcanic island of the Izu Islands erupting about every 20 years. This is why the island is mainly composed of basalt and lava fields. At the center of the island is Mount Oyama (elevation 775.1 meters), with a deep crater, the caldera at the summit is believed to have been formed in a massive eruption about 3,000 years ago. In 1983 a dramatic eruption destroyed the Ako onsen area when it was covered in lava, the lava moved slowly so everyone was able to evacuate. The last major eruption was in 2000 and was so heavy the entire island was evacuated to the main part of Tokyo. It was five years before they were allowed to return. Access to parts of the island, mainly close to the crater, is restricted due to volcanic dangers such as toxic sulfur dioxide gas. The island is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and is the third largest of the Izu Islands.
Written mention of the island go back to the Nara Period (710-794). During the Edo Period (1600-1868) the island was one place prisoners were exiled to. Some of the famous prisoners included the yakuza gambler Koganei Kojirō, Takeuchi Shikibu the Japanese classics scholar, the founder of the Misogikyō Shintō sect Inoue Masakane, Hanabusa Itchō the founder of the Hanabusa school of painting, and the most famous being the kabuki actor Ikushima Shingorō from the Ejima-Ikushima Incident. By the early Meiji Period an estimated 2,300 exiles lived on the island. In the Meiji Period (1868 - 1912) the administration of the island was transferred to Tokyo. In 1920 the Ōshima Island Government Office began handling island administration, the name of the office was changed to Ōshima Subprefecture in 1926, in 1943 the Miyake Subprefecture was split off from Ōshima Subprefecture. In the postwar 1940s and the 1950s the villages on the island were merged into the present Miyake Mura.
Things to do on the island include fishing, diving, birdwatching, hiking, rock climbing, soaking in onsen, eating local seafood, and doing not much of anything but relaxing.
POPULATION: The population in 2020 was 2,273
DISTANCE FROM URBAN TOKYO: Located 180 km south of Tokyo center.

ACCOMODATIONS: Small hotels, inns, and minshuku rooms. You may need to provide your own toothbrush and towel as not all supply them. Rooms in may include breakfast and dinner, check when you book. It is also best to book after you have reservations for transit to the island so they canm pick you up on arrival.
