The island has had inhabitants from at least the Japanese Paleolithic era, Stone tools made in the Jōmon Period from the abundant Kōzushima obsidian have been found on Honshū in Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures as well as in the Kantō Region. During the Asuka Period (538 to 710) Kōzushima was part of Suruga Province, in 680 AD it became part of Izu Province when that province was established. The main export of the island in the Heian Period was obsidian. Today the economy is mainly commercial fishing, seasonal tourism, and small scale farming. In the Edo Period political dissidents and religious exiles were often sent here.
