For users of the Organic Maps, Maps.Me and Google Maps apps the items below have bookmarks you can import into those apps to make navigation easier. Some entries on this page may include a note that says "Description to be added soon ." These entries are for items I felt should be listed even if the description is not ready to assist those who wish to plan a trip. When possible I included a link to an official web page, I suggest also doing web searchs for more information. Hachijō Machi (八丈町)
Official pages for each of the towns and villages of Tokyo will have sections of interest to visitors. These will likely be labeled as dealing with culture, tourism, or events.
ACCESS:
Hachijōjima has been inhabited since Jōmon Period (c. 14,000-300 BC) artifacts, such as magatama, have been found on the island. In the Nara Period (710-794) this was part of Suruga Province, in 680 it was transferred to the newly formed Izu Province. The island has been a place of exile, originally for political figures and after 1704 for certain classes of criminals. The daimyō Ukita Hideie was banished here after his defeat in the battle of Sekigahara. In 1868 the new Meiji government declared a general amnesty and most of the population returned to the mainland. In 1881 banishment as a punishment was abolished. During WWII Hachijōjima was the location of the 16th Shin'yō Special Attack Squadron base for explosive motorboat and manned torpedo suicide attacks, the war ended before they could be used.
